Since the mid-sixteenth century this altarpiece has dominated the presbytery from\nbehind the high altar in the Parish Church.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Tiziano (Titian) Vecellio (Pieve di Cadore 1490ca. \u2013 Venice 1576) painted this work\nin his old age, presumably around 1554.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The painting was probably a gift from the great artist in gratitude for the long years\nduring which he enjoyed the parish benefit assigned by the Duke of Mantua first to\nthe painter\u2019s son Pomponio and then to his nephew. Titian\u2019s late work expresses his\npictorial wisdom and craft, especially in the powerful figure of Christ, who lovingly\ndirects his gaze on to His kneeling Mother, surrounded by vibrant light, which is the\nhallmark of immortal Vecellio.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Important critics, such as Panofsky (1969), also point out the exceptional quality of\nthis altarpiece from a theological perspective, and suggest a resemblance with another\npainting by Titian, \u201cCristo coronato di spine\u201d (The Crowning with Thorns), housed in\nthe Mus\u00e9e du Louvre, as well as with Michelangelo\u2019s style.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The altarpiece shows the figure of the risen Christ in the centre, and the kneeling\nVirgin in adoration. To the left, behind Christ, the work also shows four figures in\nsemi-darkness, respectively, Noah, Abraham, Adam carrying Christ\u2019s cross, and Eve.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The presence of these characters has made it difficult to grasp the theological\nsignificance of the painting.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This is the only altarpiece by Vecellio left in the Mantuan area to this day.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The canvas, exhibited for the first time at Ca\u2019 Pesaro in 1935, formed part of the\nmajor retrospective of the artist\u2019s work in Venice. It appeared in Palazzo Ducale (The\nduke\u2019s Palace) in Mantua as part of the 1974 exhibition \u201cTesori d\u2019arte nella terra dei\nGonzaga\u201d (Treasures of art in the land of the Gonzagas).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On the night between 25 th and 26 th April 1968 the painting was stolen but found again\non 12 May the same year; the work was badly damaged in the theft and was\nsubsequently sent to the Istituto Centrale del Restauro in Rome and returned to the\nchurch on 22 nd September 1971.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
