Mount Medolano, profile<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The hill Monte Medolano is the first Morainic formation which stretches out across\nthe Plain of Medole.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite its limited height, Monte Medolano has always\nrepresented a relevant strategic point for the control of the whole area called \u201cPlain of\nMedole\u201d, which, in the early 20 th century, was still a land of heath crossed by rows of\nmulberry trees. Its geomorphological structure made it the natural scene of important\nwar events.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On october 9 th 1706, during the War of the Spanish Succession, in this area of flatland\nsurrounding the hill, Prince Filippo d\u2019Assia Cassel\u2019s Spanish army fought against the\nFrench army led by Count Medavy, who prevailed over his enemy.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On August 5 th 1796, at dawn, in the course of the Napoleonic invasion, a clash broke\nout between the French and the Austrian armies near Monte Medolano, where\nAustrian General Wurmser had taken up his position. General Verdier, in command\nof the Napoleonic cavalry, directed his attack towards the hill and took hold of it\nwithin a few hours.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In this battle Bonaparte experimented with the tactics of the<\/span>\u201cmanoeuvre sur les derri\u00e8res\u201d (strategic envelopment or encirclement)<\/span><\/i>, which was to\nbecome the decisive key to Napoleon\u2019s future successes.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

63 years later, on the morning of 24 th June 1859, Marshal of France Mac-Mahon, at\nthe head of II Army Corps, moved from Castiglione delle Stiviere towards Cavriana\nand ran into the Austrian army close to Ca\u2019 Morino. Marshal Mac-Mahon\nimmediately advanced towards Monte Medolano; from there he observed and\ndirected the whole operation.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

These events are commemorated in a plaque on the wall of the manor house of the\nnearby \u201cCorte della Barcaccia\u201d (Court of the Boat).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This place represents the foundation of our historical memory: by courtesy of Mrs Emilia\nPerteghella and the contribution of the volunteers of Associazione Storica Medolese\n(Historical Association in Medole) tourists can now visit it in the respectful memory of those\nevents that 150 years ago shocked Italy but, at the same time, made its making as a\nnation possible.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
